Safe Harbour “Night Without A Tux” Gala Features Popular Cartoonist

Robb Armstrong, creator of the JumpStart comic strip and author of “Fearless A Cartoonist’s Guide to Life,” is the featured speaker at Safe Harbour’s tenth annual “Night Without A Tux” fundraising gala, on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Carlisle Country Club.

Robb Armstrong, a native of Philadelphia, struck gold with his daily strip, JumpStart, which he began in 1988. JumpStart strip is considered the most-widely syndicated comic strip from an African-American author in history.

JumpStart focuses on the Cobb family in Philadelphia. The heads of the family are Joseph “Joe” Cobb Sr., a city police officer, and Marcy Cobb, a nurse. Their kids, daughter Sunny, son JoJo, and twins Tommi and Teddy round out the rest of the cast. The basic theme of JumpStart are the trials and tribulations of a regular middle-class Black family. Armstrong’s comic regularly features characters who are homeless or have been homeless but now have transitioned to successful lives. He frequently features storylines about shelters, homelessness, and supporting individuals in need and/or organizations who assist those individuals.

In 2016, Armstrong published the book, “Fearless A Cartoonists Guide to Life.” In Fearless, Armstrong weaves personal stories of a traumatic childhood and the transcendent power of art together with drawing tutorials and original illustrations in a compelling guide to living through the good times and the bad.

“Night Without A Tux” raises funds to support Safe Harbour’s mission of providing housing and supportive services for homeless and nearly homeless individuals and families to help them achieve independent living by increasing their basic life skills. The event also features dinner, music and dancing with Jazz Me, and a Silent Auction.
